We have helped many a lawyer build a niche legal practice. The concept of niche marketing is different than marketing a specific practice area or legal specialty. You should think of a niche practice in industry terms or as a very narrow specialty. For example, you may have a family law boutique firm. Family law is a practice area and a legal specialty. If we were to market a family law niche, it may be focused on divorce for men, or grandparent rights, or cohabitation issues, or same sex divorce. Estate planning is a practice area, estate planning for doctors is a niche. Make sense?
Examples of Niches in the Law
- Craft Beer Law
- Cannabis Law
- Food Law
- College & University Law
- Apartment Building Law
- Dog Bite Law
Benefits of Niche Marketing
- Set yourself apart from the competition
- Be an industry thought leader
- Create a premium brand
- Create demand by being a known expert
- Charge (and make) more money
There are a couple things to think about before starting and marketing a niche law practice. You must make sure there is a demand for it. For the youngsters out there, you may not remember Y2K. Many lawyers thought that Y2K was going to be the next legal boom. It was a bust. The point is to make sure there is a buying market for your niche. Also, we highly recommend that whatever niche that you choose, you have a passion for it. Or, at least an interest. Marrying your passion with your job can be very lucrative as well as fun and satisfying (that’s why we specifically market lawyers – we love you guys!).
