As we teach our clients, a professional bio should not read like a resume and merely be a laundry list of one’s many fabulous accomplishments.
So, I will not bore you with all the wonderful things I have done.
An effective bio needs to tell the reader why you are the best person for the job. This is my attempt…
I have a long history of doing nothing but successfully marketing law firms and helping attorneys, of all experience levels, become successful. Most people believe what Malcolm Gladwell says in his book, Outliers, that it takes ten thousand hours of practice to be become an expert in a field. Based upon my math, which is certainly not scientific, over the last 26 years I have spent 52,000 hours on law firm marketing and attorney development. Go me – I am an expert.
These 26 years have been spent only working at two law firms. Why should you care? Because the average job length for a marketing professional in a law firm is much like that of an NFL lineman – usually about 4 years. I served as Chief Marketing Officer at Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, in Bridgewater, New Jersey, for 18 years after starting my career in 1991 as a Practice Development Coordinator at Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti in Morristown, New Jersey. This longevity must mean something, no? What it means is that I have a proven track-record of building long-term, deep relationships and I know how to make money for law firms and lawyers. I can do the same for you.
My approach is to get to know you, what goals you have, your personality, your strengths, your weaknesses and create a tailored, practical, cost-effective, implementable approach – no cookie-cutter, nonsensical consultant-speak here. Making more money for rich, old, white men does not get me out of bed in the morning (even though I can do this). Building firms and careers does. The people who I have helped view me as a coach, psychologist, cheerleader and loyal friend. And I would be insincere, if I did not admit that it’s a two-way street – I receive the same loyalty from the many great lawyers I have worked with over the years.
On a personal level, My wife and I have 4 kids in the prime of their youth which means activities, activities and more activities. This means I understand the value of time and the cost of wasted time. This also means that I have a keen understanding that people have interests other than work. My goal is singular in focus – to create success for our clients without wasting time and money. And to have fun while doing it. Let’s start the journey together.
