We compiled a bunch of marketing terms of which every lawyer needs to be familiar. Some of the definitions are very technical. If you need clarification, please just ask.
- Business development = sales
- Sales = business development
- Cross-selling = making more money for your colleagues, and you
- Cross-marketing = promoting your colleagues, and you
- Rainmaker = dude or dudette with big book of business
- RFQ = Request for Qualifications or we want more for less
- RFP = Request for Proposal or we want more for less
- AFA = alternative fee arrangements or we want more for less
- Client Service = making clients happy and not pissing them off
- Marketing coach = somebody who makes you do stuff you don’t want to do
- Off the record = things reporters can’t repeat
- CRM = your mailing list (but really so. much. more.)
- PR = getting your name in the press
- SEO = being found on the Internet
- Crisis management = getting your ass out of a jam
- Succession planning = how to transfer (read: take) clients from old timers
- Content strategy = writing stuff, posting stuff and becoming known for stuff
- Cause marketing = doing good for others while helping yourself or win-win
- Attorney bio = the wonderful you
- Pitch meeting = trying to get biz from new prospect
- Blogger = being a thought leader
