We are reposting this blog from last year. Consider it our treat – Happy Halloween from ESQuisite Marketing!
This Halloween, we must avoid vampires, ghouls and ghosts, witches, and a nasty virus. These are indeed scary things. Do you know what, though? Marketing should not scare you. In fact, marketing can be, and should be, fun. In addition, it will pay off if done right.
Eliminate the Fear
Marketing and business development for lawyers is all about building relationships. Therefore, you get to meet new people – prospective clients and referral sources. It’s not like you must meet with Frankenstein. How will you meet new folks? It may be tough during this pandemic, but you have options. There are all sorts of virtual networking groups. Bar associations, Chambers of Commerce, and trade groups are holding on-line events. Sign up, meet some strangers – just don’t take any candy from them. (Ya see what we did there?)
Tricks, Not Treats
As you build relationships, you will have the opportunity to “sell” your services. I view selling differently than others. To me, selling is simply listening to what others need. Doing a needs assessment is as simple as asking questions and listening for answers. Everyone can do that since we all have ears. At the end of the day, it matters what people are buying. You can be the solution to their problems. On the referral side, there are many things you can do to secure recommendations. The key is to think about their needs, not your own. Don’t be a Headless Horseman. These relationships will lead to lots of business (maybe some candy).
Learn About Marketing
Get over your demons and get educated about legal marketing and business development. Read a book, attend a webinar, check out our blog. There are plenty of resources to do what you are already doing – only better. Most of this stuff is easy – it takes time, consistency, and common sense. We know that time is not a luxury for you. We know you are not laying around like a mummy. But you can create a plan where you do a little marketing every day. So, learn, plan and act.
Werewolves and Zombies
Werewolves and zombies do not really mean anything here. I just want to stick with the Halloween theme and both are scary. They should scare you, but marketing shouldn’t. Happy Halloween from ESQuisite Marketing – have fun and please be safe out there.
